A tornado tore through a Boy Scout camp in western Iowa this evening,
killing four Scouts and injuring dozens more.

The camp is the Little Sioux Scout Ranch, located between Blencoe and
Little Sioux, about one hour north of Omaha in Iowa's Loess Hills.

Arli Hasbrouck, a spokesperson for the Boy Scouts of America's Mid-
American Council in Omaha, confirmed that four Scouts were killed in
the tornado. She did not know how many were injured.

She said 100 youths, aged 14 to 18, were at the Little Sioux Scout
Reservation for a week-long leadership training camp called Pahuk
Pride.

This morning the local TV station, KTIV, said 42 of the 48 injured were
still hospitalized. It was their National Junior Leader Camp with 93
boys and 25 adults. These are all experience Scouts and Scouters.

Rich Hawes of Crew 26, Mid-America Council, reported:
"Four Scouts attending the NYLT course at the Little Sioux Scout Ranch
died in the collapse of the camp bunkhouse that they were in. A
possible level 3 tornado struck the camp directly. Nearly 50 injured
Scouts and Scouters were transported or life-flighted to local hospitals
for treatment.

One of the Scouts killed was from our Troop, his older sisters are part
of our Venturing Crew. It has been a long and difficult night as word
of the safety or condition of our other Scouts was slow in coming in
from this remote camp.

Scouts and Scouters reacted correctly before, during, and after the
storm. Emergency response from the local volunteer fire and rescue
units was immediate. It was simply a direct hit on several of the camp
buildings, including the ranger's home by a massive storm. Even a
trained weather spotter was caught in the tornado as it was rain wrapped
and formed suddenly over the area.

I respectfully ask that there be no "second guessing" comments posted on
the various e-lists that this update is being sent to.

The camp had a weather radio, radios between the camp areas, the camp
siren was sounded, emergency drills had already been practiced in the
days before, and there are already many reports of heroism and exemplary
action carried out by Scouts and Scouters at the camp. Older Scouts
covered younger Scouts with their bodies, Scouts rescued the ranger and
his family from their destroyed home - to include the 2 mo. old infant
that is still hospitalized. Nearly a mile of downed trees and
impassable roads was cleared to reach the destroyed bunkhouse. Scouts
and Scouters immediately reacted with rescue and first aid efforts just
as they had trained this week.

The bunkhouse was a standard Scout issue 1970's frame building on a
slab. It is believed that a pickup truck near the cabin struck the
chimney of the fireplace, causing the collapse and the fatalities. The
truck was found destroyed about 50 yards away on the far side of the
cabin. As 50 or more people were at the cabin, and from the news
pictures released, I don't know why more were not killed as nothing was
left but knee high wreckage.

Thank you all for your concerns, thoughts and prayers for the families
of those killed or injured, as well as the Scouts and Scouters that
witnessed and survived this tragedy."
