As many of you know, on August 1, 2008, BSA reissued the ENTIRE series
of Merit Badge Pamphlets. The new pamphlets have full color covers and
color pictures throughout the text.
Auto Mechanics was renamed to Automotive Maintenance, and the
Architecture and Landscape Architecture BOOKLETS have been combined.
Other than the booklets for the merit badges listed below, the OLD
booklets are still good, and BSA is selling them at $2.49 each, while
they last.
The price is now $4.49 per booklet. All of the new booklets have new
stock numbers, which are in the range 35850-35968, arranged
alphabetically.
The new booklets have silver borders at the top and bottom for the
"Eagle Required" badges, and blue borders for all the others.
I've completed the analysis of the changes to merit badges as a result
of the August 1, 2008, issue of all new color merit badge pamphlets.
17 of the merit badges have changed requirements (some minor, some
very major). Those 17 badges all have pamphlets which bear a 2008
copyright date.
Here's the final list:
Architecture
Automotive Maintenance (new name for Auto Mechanics)
Cinematography
Coin Collecting
Collections
Drafting
Emergency Preparedness
Engineering
Farm Mechanics
Indian Lore
Insect Study
Lifesaving
Motorboating
Painting
Pottery
Radio and
Swimming
The rest of the pamphlets, although they LOOK very different, with new
color covers and colorful illustrations and photos throughout the
books, are otherwise unchanged from the old editions, and have had no
changes to the requirements. They all carry copyright dates of 2007 or
earlier, whatever the previous editions said.
The summary of the changes can be found at:

I've also updated my list of booklets, with the old and new stock
numbers and copyright dates. That can be found at http://usscouts.org/mb/mbbooks.asp
Scouts starting a badge with the new books can use the new
requirements if they wish. Those that already started with the old
books can and should normally complete the badges using the old
requirements. Those starting a badge after next January 1, 2009, MUST
use the new requirements.
